The first client did not come from cold outreach

We had been sending cold messages every day for weeks.

Demos built and sent. Follow ups. Rate inquiries that went nowhere. The pipeline was moving but nothing was closing, and there is a particular kind of tiredness that comes from doing the work correctly and getting no result back from it.

Then a reference came in.

The client

A supplier of electrical and plumbing items needed their website redesigned. Someone in our network had passed our name along.

That was it. First client.

It sounds small written down, but it carried a lot at that point. Every hour spent building the brand, learning new tools, improving our own site and sending messages that got ignored suddenly had a result attached to it.

We spent time understanding their business properly before touching anything. What they sold, who bought it, what the site needed to communicate and what the old one was failing to do. Then we rebuilt it from the ground up.

What it actually taught us

The lesson was not about the project. It was about where the deal came from.

Cold outreach is still worth doing and we would do it again. It builds pipeline, it sharpens the pitch, and it teaches you what your market really looks like. In our case, just reading through the leads taught us more about the gap we were selling into than any amount of research would have.

But the first real breakthrough almost always comes from someone who already knows you, or knows someone who does. People do not only buy a service. They buy trust, and trust arrives through a person far more often than through a message.

What we would tell someone starting

Do both, and do not treat them as competing.

Keep the cold outreach going, because it is the only thing that builds a pipeline out of nothing. But also make sure the people already around you know exactly what you are building and who you can help.

You do not know who they know. We did not.
